I didn't know I was looking for Ryukogi, which is how I found it....a beautiful Buddhist temple on the site of an old execution ground.The story goes that the monk Nichiren was set to be executed at this site but a flash of light scared off the executioners. Instead, he was banished to an island and found his calling. Nichiren Buddhism teaches that you can attain enlightenment in THIS lifetime and popularized the phrase that means as much, from the Lotus Sutra: NAM-MYOHO-RENGE-KYO.
So, that's where I was. Just at the site of a miracle, that's all.

Have visited Ryuko-ji myself (Oct. 2006). .I would recommend any serious Nichiren practitioner to take the opportunity to visit Japan and see some of the places Nichiren himself walked and practiced, if said opportunity presents itself.See photos of Ryuko-ji on day 3 of our pilgrimage blog http://nichiren-shu.org/boston... .
