For a very interesting p.o.v. regarding why the U.S. is in such a predicament, see the remarkable Bill Moyers in his latest interview with Andrew J. Bacevich who is a professor at Boston University and a former serviceman (Viet Nam).  Bacevich wrote a book called "The Limits of Power".  I am just listening to the interview now on the recommendation of my savvy political friend.
